As you may be aware, the three important components of yoga practice are asana, pranayama and meditation. The most important text that is normally referred to as authority on these practices is the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. It lists several asana, pranayama and meditation practices. However, over time, as yoga has gained global acceptance and popularity, many new techniques and practices have been added. In the Integral Yoga style of yoga that I practice and teach, there is a basic sequence that forms the core of the practice. As one becomes comfortable with the basic routine, one can start adding more variations to the basic set and also more new practices.

podcast channel

As you may be aware, I have been offering monthly workshops wherein I discuss various aspects of yoga philosophy. The main focus in these workshops is to discuss the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali in some depth. In addition, from time to time, I also discuss concepts from the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and other related ancient scriptures. In order to preserve these talks for future reference, I have been making an audio recording of these discussions and sharing them with the participants. These audio recordings are now available on the podcast channel on my blog. You are welcome to download these audio recordings for your use. In addition, you can listen to these podcasts as well as subscribe to them on itunes as well.

youtube channel

As you would have noticed from many of the recent posts on my blog, I have been adding short videos of many of the commonly practiced asana and pranayama sequences. I strongly urge you to subscribe to my youtube channel and visit the channel frequently to get instructions for your own asana and pranayama practices. Please share the link to the channel with your friends who might benefit from these detailed video instructions.
I would love to hear your feedback and, of course, would welcome suggestions for future videos that you would like to see on the channel.

Yoga May Improve Quality of Life, Survival in Patients With Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer

Yoga combined with conventional exercises improved quality of life as well as survival in patients with non-metastatic breast cancer, according to recent study results.

At a median follow-up of 80 months, results of a randomized trial — which were presented at the 2022 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium — demonstrated an 80% disease-free survival rate (the measure of time after treatment during which no sign of cancer is found) with yoga and conventional exercises in patients with non-metastatic breast cancer (426 patients). This is compared with 76.7% for conventional exercises only (424 patients).

“The impact of yoga on breast cancer survival is hypothesized to be through improvement of quality of life (psychological response including helplessness/hopelessness, fighting spirit, depression and fatigue), change in stress responses, compliance to treatment (and) reduction in weight,” said Dr. Nita S. Nair, lead author on the study and professor and consultant surgeon at Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai, India, in an interview with CURE.

Virtual Yoga Program Could Improve IBS Symptoms

A virtual yoga program could help patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) improve their symptoms, fatigue, and stress, according to a new study published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology.

Previous studies have found that in-person yoga programs can improve physiological, psychological, and emotional health. With the growth of virtual options during the COVID-19 pandemic, an online yoga program could be helpful as well, the study authors wrote.

“IBS affects upwards of 15 [to] 20% of the North American population, and despite our advances in the area, we have very limited options to offer our patients,” says Maitreyi Raman, MD, the senior study author and director of Alberta’s Collaboration of Excellence for Nutrition in Digestive Diseases.
