Sheetali and Seetkari cooling breaths (with video)

Seetkari pranayama (cooling)

In today's post, I would like to introduce you to two breathing techniques which are jointly labeled as "cooling pranayama".

The first one is called "sītkārī" (सीत्कारी) which literally means the breathing technique that "produces the hissing 'seee' or the 'seet' sound". In English, it is usually translated as the "hissing cooling breath". The second is called "śītalī" ( शीतली) which means the techniques that has a cooling effect.

These practices provide cooling not only at the physical level but also at the nervous and mental levels. They are highly effective in cooling the system during summer time. However, they can be practiced even during winter months as they calm the nerves down and also help release mental tension and stress. These pranayama techniques also help reduce blood pressure.

podcast channel

As you may be aware, I have been offering monthly workshops wherein I discuss various aspects of yoga philosophy. The main focus in these workshops is to discuss the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali in some depth. In addition, from time to time, I also discuss concepts from the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and other related ancient scriptures. In order to preserve these talks for future reference, I have been making an audio recording of these discussions and sharing them with the participants. These audio recordings are now available on the podcast channel on my blog. You are welcome to download these audio recordings for your use. In addition, you can listen to these podcasts as well as subscribe to them on itunes as well.

youtube channel

As you would have noticed from many of the recent posts on my blog, I have been adding short videos of many of the commonly practiced asana and pranayama sequences. I strongly urge you to subscribe to my youtube channel and visit the channel frequently to get instructions for your own asana and pranayama practices. Please share the link to the channel with your friends who might benefit from these detailed video instructions.
I would love to hear your feedback and, of course, would welcome suggestions for future videos that you would like to see on the channel.

How Yoga and Breathing Help the Brain Unwind

Anyone who has struggled with anxiety and depression, or knows someone who has, will understand how the body’s energy is out of balance. We see this over short-time frames, hour-to-hour, day-to-day—with abrupt changes in mood, sudden anxiety, crashes in willpower and motivation, bursts of activity, and other difficulty reacting constructively to stresses—and over longer spans of time, with chronic fatigue, burn-out, persistent difficulty resting and recharging, disrupted sleep, and trouble pursuing long-term plans.

More schools using yoga to calm, strengthen, focus students

Shayna Barrett, who uses a wheelchair, said practicing yoga has helped strengthen her core muscles enough to allow her to get in and out of the chair by herself. “It’s showed me I can do new, hard things,” said Barrett, 19.

Success stories such as Barrett’s are why Saunders, a high school French teacher, decided to train in yoga this past year and bring the practice to Lincoln students. Twice a week, she teaches students in the school’s extended support services program, which is offered to teens ages 15 to 21 with disabilities.

How Mindfulness Can Help Engineers Solve Problems

Engineering work demands creativity and innovation in order to solve complex, interdisciplinary problems. But creativity and innovation skills are not emphasized in many traditional engineering courses. So engineers enter the workforce with important analysis skills, but may struggle to “think outside the box” when it comes to creative problem-solving. Our research shows that mindfulness can help engineers strengthen their ability to generate new ideas, leading to new ways of thinking and better solutions.
