The four purusharthas (human pursuits)

The four purusharthas

Introduction

We all seek happiness in life. How we define happiness and what means we use to attain that happiness is an individual choice. Most of us seem to identify happiness with material gains achieved through fulfilment of material desires. Material desires can span the whole spectrum of attainments - getting married to the right individual, getting a child, having a certain amount of wealth, possessions like house, clothes, bank balance, real estate etc. and the list is literally unending. The problem with this approach, as we know from our experience is, that the desires are never-ending. When one is fulfilled, another one, maybe a little more of the same or in a modified form, raises its head. Now we are busy fulfilling the "upgraded" desire. Since it is impossible to fulfil all our desires, we end up having mental issues like stress, anxiety, depression, guilt feelings etc.

podcast channel

As you may be aware, I have been offering monthly workshops wherein I discuss various aspects of yoga philosophy. The main focus in these workshops is to discuss the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali in some depth. In addition, from time to time, I also discuss concepts from the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and other related ancient scriptures. In order to preserve these talks for future reference, I have been making an audio recording of these discussions and sharing them with the participants. These audio recordings are now available on the podcast channel on my blog. You are welcome to download these audio recordings for your use. In addition, you can listen to these podcasts as well as subscribe to them on itunes as well.

youtube channel

As you would have noticed from many of the recent posts on my blog, I have been adding short videos of many of the commonly practiced asana and pranayama sequences. I strongly urge you to subscribe to my youtube channel and visit the channel frequently to get instructions for your own asana and pranayama practices. Please share the link to the channel with your friends who might benefit from these detailed video instructions.
I would love to hear your feedback and, of course, would welcome suggestions for future videos that you would like to see on the channel.

Yoga in the News

Scientific evidence: Yoga really is that healthy

"In a German study, obese participants who practiced traditional hatha yoga regularly for 12 weeks reduced weight and waist circumference. “No participant started a calorie-restricted diet during the study period,” emphasize the authors in “Deutsche Ärzteblatt International”. This is surprising, since yoga does make you sweat, depending on the practice, but is not practiced at an intensity that burns a lot of calories. Nevertheless, the weight-reducing effect also occurred in another study with 60 overweight women, about the US scientists 2022 in the journal PLOS One reported."

Exploring the Effect of Yoga on Exercise Endurance As Assessed by Cardiorespiratory Efficiency Tests in Exercise Physiology Laboratory: A Pilot Study

By studying the dynamics of the various cardiorespiratory responses, we have determined the values of fitness parameters in subjects involved in yogic practices. Cardiorespiratory efficiency parameters were found to be evidently better in youths who have undergone a specific duration of yogic exercises. It was found that the yoga group had statistically significantly higher VO2 max (p<0.001) and better PFI, BHT, and 40mm Hg endurance test values than the control group. Thus, the results of the present study indicated that yogic practice caused substantial conditioning of cardiorespiratory parameters and can improve the aerobic capacity of the individual.
